We are approaching the end of the project

"The work with synthesizing the results and insights obtained from the project has been intensified during recent months. This work involves all researchers in the project and is a truly interdisciplinary exercise which, so far, has been very healthy for all of us. There are obviously no simple solutions to find Pathways towards a sustainable energy system. Yet, there are many possibilities and the project shows that it is possible to meet the required climate goals but that this will require that all technologies and measures are used, especially if considering security of supply and competitiveness. In addition to the scientific publications from the project, the aim is to convey the project results to a broad group of stakeholders, in industry and in governmental organizations. The aim of the synthesizing work is to find a good way to do this and in this context I am happy that we can show many opportunities for transforming the European energy system. It seems as a key message from our project could be "Yes, we can!"

"The expectations on the outcome from the COP 15 meeting in Copenhagen were highly set by many of us. Although the meeting did not deliver any full agreement of binding targets regarding reduction of GHG emissions, it did show that there is a global consensus that the temperature increase should be kept below two degrees and that both developed and developing countries need to contribute to meet this target. COP15 also showed that the climate change issue is raised to the highest level of government. This emphasizes the high importance of the research performed within the Pathways project, as it shows different pathways which meet emission reduction targets for Europe. Thus, our project can show the opportunities as well as the challenges of meeting stringent reduction targets and mitigating climate change, and also indicate the required cost-levels in doing so. These results will then provide policy makers and industry with a good basis for the decisions needed to address climate change.

We are now entering the last year of this stage of the Pathways project. Therefore, the work with synthesizing the results and insights obtained so far will be intensified, hoping we can convey a clear message to decision makers on the many possibilities which are present along pathways to a more sustainable energy system."

"Work is ongoing with analysing the Pathways to Sustainable European Energy System. These Pathways will cover several key sectors and all 35 to 40 researchers in the project will contribute.  The work on Security of supply has also been intensified. Below the Pathways indicators and scenarios are gives in brief. As during previous periods, results from the project have been presented to different audiences in conferences and workshops. The project follows the plan and I am looking forward to the continued activities during 2009!"

"In spite of the economic recession there is a growing interest in the area of energy and on sustainable development and, thus, we have seen significant interest in recent results presented from our project. Examples are possibilities with electrification of the transportation sector, such as how plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can act on the control power market which was presented in a recent study. Another important issue is local and regional energy planning. The project follows the plan and I am looking forward to the continued activities during 2009!" Read more

"2008 was an exciting year for the project. The project gathers some 35 researchers at Chalmers as well as at other universities which make it possible to apply a wide range of knowledge to address the key questions identified in the beginning of the project. Several new results have been obtained and the metho-dologies developed make it possible to address new research questions which have emerged during 2008. The very first Pathways´ Doctoral thesis was also finalized and presented. In all, the project follows the plan and I am looking forward to an inspiring 2009!" Read more

"The research follows the original plan. The mapping of the global markets for gas, oil and coal is complete and reporting of this work is in its fi nal stage. This work is used as input to the modeling and assessment of pathways for the European power generation system. The latter includes an analysis of the entire chain capture, transport and storage of CO2. Results from the modeling have been presented in scientific papers and meetings. The work on biomass supply issues for Europe continues as well as the work on the demand side for the building stock and industry and papers have been completed in these areas. The projects which are related to the Pathway project are also proceeding according to plan. As for the ongoing work, there is no immediate risk for the project."

"The research follows the original plan with some additions such as including a power systems analysis on the effect from integration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) in power generation systems. The mapping of the global markets for gas, oil and coal is complete and work is ongoing to report this work. This mapping provides valuable input to the modeling and assessment of pathways for the European power generation system. The latter includes development of a modeling methodology which can assess the entire chain capture, transport and storage of CO2. Results from this modeling have been presented in scientifi c papers and meetings. In addition, work on biomass supply issues for Europe continues as well as the work on the demand side for the building stock and industry. The projects which are related to the Pathway project are also proceeding according to plan. As for the ongoing work, there is no immediate risk for the project."

December 2007
"The research has expanded during this quarter. The expansion includes new EU projects, a project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and a smaller project funded by the Swiss Energy Agency (carried out by ETH). Efforts are being made to secure that the activities remain focused. The mapping of the energy infrastructure is in its fi nal stage with work focused on the global coal market. The co-operation with the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and Universität Stuttgart (IER) on European energy systems modeling will continue within a new EU funded project (PLANETS). Work has been initiated within the Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) project (PATH-TO-RES), which deals with 6 case studies on how to transform local energy systems. As for the ongoing work, there is no immediate risks for the project. Unfortunately, the involvement by ABB is still pending. As pointed out in previous reports, possibility for support for continued fundraising activities must be clarifi ed and discussions on this matter have been held with the president office at Chalmers."
