Introduction

"Pathways - Swedish system solutions"

The Swedish Energy Agency is now strengthening the Pathways project. "Pathways – Swedish system solutions" is focused on numerous areas and solutions where Sweden and Swedish research have front-line competence and can thus contribute new knowledge of importance for redirecting both Sweden's and Europe's energy systems toward sustainability and meeting climate goals as well as benefiting Swedish export industry.

The overall goal of the Pathways project is to analyze and present courses of action toward sustainable energy systems in Europe.

"The overall aim is to study and evaluate pathways towards a sustainable energy system with respect to technical, economic and social issues. This means to study how pathways to a sustainable energy system can be characterized and visualized and to evaluate the consequences of these pathways with respect to the characteristics of the energy system as such (types of technologies, technical and economic barriers) and for society in general (security of supply, competitiveness and required policies)."

"Pathways – Swedish system solutions" naturally has the same comprehensive objective as the Pathways project, but also the following sub-goals:

• The project will show how knowledge and experiences that we have built up in Sweden, for instance through the auspices of the Swedish Energy Agency, can contribute to creating pathways toward sustainable development all over Europe.

• The project will increase the visibility of Swedish research in both Europe and the rest of the world.

• The project will draw benefit from statistical knowledge, databases and analytical models which have been developed with Swedish funds and to which we have close access – and hence an advantage over researchers in other European countries.

• Within the project a multidisciplinary research group will collaborate, thereby clarifying the value of a broad interdisciplinary basis for decisions about development of our energy systems in the direction of long-term sustainability.

The project's interdisciplinary research group consists of engineers, economists, jurists and social anthropologists in collaboration. Experienced professors and doctors in the group serve as research directors and several licentiate and doctoral candidates as researchers. The project is directed by Prof. Filip Johnsson of Chalmers, with Bo Rydén of Profu as assistant project director. Its assistants at the Swedish Energy Agency are Kenneth Möllersten and Paul Westin.

An overall interdisciplinary synthetic effort will also continue in the project throughout its duration by means of collaboration in the entire research group. Moreover, the project's research group will cooperate with the international research group in the Pathways project.
