Pathways is part of the Alliance for Global sustainablility

"This project will show what pathways to a sustainable energy future means in practice.”

European solar markets

The second phase of the Pathways project include a more detailed mapping of the growing solar power industry, with focus on CSP (concentrated solar power) and PV (photovoltaics). Since cost is definitely one of the most important drivers of future development, and solar energy costs are strongly linked to global expansion, this cannot be done without a global outlook.

Modelling energy demand for 2050 in the EU building stock

A modelling work which examines three different scenarios for efficiency of energy end uses for the EU 27 building stock to 2050 is carried out. Summarising results it can be said that EU goals on energy savings and CO2 emissions can be met in both the Market and Policy scenario by focusing on minimum efficiency construction standards for new built dwellings, end-use efficiency applied at the useful energy level, conversion efficiency standards for final energy to useful energy and fuel switching. These measures can contribute to meeting EU goals on renewables and direct CO2 emissions if combined with efforts on the supply side.

Role of electricity transmission and interconnectors

New interconnectors will play an important role in the ongoing processes of integrating the European electricity markets and handling the increase in renewable and intermittent sources of electricity production, such as wind power. The strengthening of the European electricity infrastructure has been identified as an area of priority in a recent communication by the European Commission. Within the Pathways project, an integrated modeling approach for addressing the complexity of generation and grid planning issues is applied, and the need for new interconnector investments across the EU has been estimated to almost 30 GW by 2030.

Debattartikel i Dagens Nyheter, 20 november 2011

Path dependence in the legal system:
implication for the development of wind power

The research concerning of the role of the legal system in the transformation of the energy system is continued at the University of Luleå. The aim of the next step is to analyse the legal implementation of wind power in Sweden on the basis of presumed path dependence.

An overview of the carbon strategies of ten of Europe's largest energy companies

A study of the 'carbon strategies' of ten of Europe's largest energy companies reveal that the large European energy producers are in the process of implementing strategies that reflect the need for less-carbon-intensive and more sustainable energy production.

The second phase initiated!

The research focus in the second phase of the Pathways project will be on the electricity system, but areas as biomass and the CCS infrastructure will also be assessed. A main research activity is the modeling of the European electricity generation system and related systems.
